Many artists I know are held back by guilt. They feel selfish for immersing themselves in their art and spending long hours in the studio away from family or other responsibilities.
We raised four children less than two years apart, and I know exactly what that guilt feels like as I tried to balance being a loving mother and a productive, focused artist with a full-time career.
I remember when Dalia, my third daughter, was only a tiny one-month-old newborn. I was holding her in my lap and rocking her while she cooed and smiled joyfully, and I felt that pang of guilt, knowing that I would leave her soon and go back to work.
I stared at her beautiful face and thought about what she might become. What would be her destiny? What passions stirred in her belly?
I realized right there in that moment that I had a choice.
I could put my dreams on a shelf and spend my days playing Barbies and helping with science projects, or I could step into my own destiny and show my three girls a woman with a passion and desire to live out her purpose.
When you put your heart on the line to pursue your dreams, you give others an example to follow. Sometimes the breakthroughs, the successes, and the wins take time to come; you stand there naked before all, feeling foolish at times, wondering if your day of victory will ever arrive.
But you won't give up! No way! Not now. You have gone too far and have hit the point of no return.
Children, friends, peers, coworkers, and even strangers are watching the way you move through life. Whether you know it or not, your example is shaping someone else’s vision of what’s possible.
You can’t go wrong pursuing your passion. Someone, somewhere, is watching you—and you might just be giving them the courage to live their destiny.
