1:45

At Milan Art Institute, we believe every artist holds untapped creative power. Often, it’s hidden in the underused right side of the brain. If you’ve ever struggled with artistic block, low endurance, or difficulty seeing beyond the literal, right brain training could be the breakthrough you need. Want to tap into your creative genius and build unstoppable momentum in your art? Start practicing these right-brain exercises today and watch your creativity soar.

Where Creativity Thrives

Most people rely heavily on their left brain for logic, structure, and productivity. But the right hemisphere is where creativity thrives. It's responsible for abstract thinking, emotional expression, visualization, and being fully present in the moment. Like any muscle, the right brain needs regular workouts to stay strong and flexible.

1 - Doodling Without a Plan

Grab a pen and start drawing flowing lines and shapes that connect naturally. Don’t think too much. For inspiration, search “Zen tangling” and try mimicking some of the patterns. Let your hand wander and enjoy the meditative flow.

3 -  Mirror Writing with Both Hands

Try fake writing with your left hand, then switch to your right. This bilateral movement helps balance the brain and stimulate creative neural pathways.

3 -  Blind Contour Drawing from Crumpled Paper

Crumple up a piece of paper and place it in front of you. Without looking down at your sketchbook, follow the contours of the crumples with your eyes. Let your pencil follow what your eyes see. Stay focused on fine detail and trust the process

4 - Draw a Face Without Looking at the Paper

Find a partner or use a photo. While staring closely at the subject’s face, draw without glancing at your sketchbook. Allow your pencil to mirror the slow movement of your eyes over every contour and shape.

5 - Dance to Music

Let your body move freely to instrumental music. Don’t plan it. Just feel the rhythm and let your movement become another form of expression. It’s a fantastic way to break out of a mental rut and connect to your instincts.

6 - Practice Visualization

Close your eyes and bring to mind a place you’ve been or something you’ve just seen. Visualize the colors, shapes, and spatial relationships. You can also study a photo, then close your eyes and mentally reconstruct every detail.

7 - Sing Made-Up Songs

Stream-of-consciousness singing is a fun and freeing way to bypass logic and dive into raw expression. The words don’t have to make sense. Just let your imagination lead.

8 - Move Differently

Walk backward, balance on one foot, or invent a quirky stride. Changing how your body moves interrupts automatic thought patterns and strengthens new creative connections.

9 - Daydream with Intention

Set a timer for 10 minutes. Close your eyes, put on instrumental music, and let your mind drift without trying to control it. What images appear? What thoughts unfold?

10 - Take Beauty Shots

Snap five photos throughout the day. Not for social media or perfection, but simply for beauty’s sake. Pay attention to light, texture, color, and mood. This sharpens your eye for composition and visual storytelling.

11 - Journal Nonsense

Set a timer and write whatever words come to your mind. Don’t censor yourself. The goal is to let your subconscious speak without judgment. You’ll be amazed at the raw creativity that flows through.

Make Right Brain Activation Part of Your Daily Practice

The more you engage your right brain, the easier it becomes to create from a place of flow, emotion, and instinct. These exercises aren’t just warmups. They are gateways to discovering your true artistic voice.
