What made you decide to do an artist residency?
I was working for a non-profit called UrbanPromise Honduras at the time, and my boss was really impressed when he saw the work I was making in the Mastery Program. My job in communications at that time was already centered around finding stories and moments of beauty to share with our community, so he saw it as a perfect transition, and I was excited to give it a shot! Through that one-year residency, I helped craft a model for future artist residencies, which included creating a body of work that told a compelling story, teaching and mentoring local youth interested in art, and coordinating art-based reflections and team-building activities throughout the year.
How did the experience influence your artwork?
That residency experience made clear to me the power of community, which would become one of my primary brand values as an artist. That’s the reason I now love painting hands so much: it’s a way of zooming in on what makes a person unique, of reading and revering the story written into their fingerprints, while understanding that no individual can do on their own the kinds of things we can accomplish together.
What was the biggest challenge you faced there?
The biggest challenge for me was probably time management. It was the first time I was expected to spend the majority of my days creating artwork, and that freedom, if you’re not used to it, can feel intimidating or even paralyzing. You come face-to-face with all your fears of what you make not being good enough. So I had to learn to take that pressure off and simply start painting.
What was your biggest takeaway from the residency?
My biggest takeaway was how powerful art is in bringing people together for a common mission. At the end of the year, I put on a final exhibit, where staff, teenagers from the program, community members, donors, and board members came from around town and around the world to experience the result of the first year of the artist residency. The feeling in the air that night was indescribable. It was just so special to embark on this experience all together and to be a conduit of the beautiful stories that were already happening all around us. Part of what I created consisted of portraits of teenagers from the program that had parts that would glow in the dark with a black light. At one point during the show, we passed out black light flashlights to the guests and shut off the lights. The collective gasp of “WOOOOOW” was a moment I’ll never forget. I fell in love with how art allows us to create a shared experience of wonder. Nothing can ever replace that.
What advice would you give to artists considering one?
I would say to put your whole self into it. If you have a crazy idea, follow it. A residency is a special container of time and space where you have room to experiment and discover a deeper part of yourself and your voice, so take full advantage of it. Whatever the residency context or format, you have a special spark in your soul that no one else can deliver, so go all in.
